Date: 10/10/2005
Dear Madam / Sir, This letter is
presented to you by The International Committee to Save the Archaeological
Sites of Pasargad, formed 40 days ago in prompt response to reliable
information gathered from inside Iran confirming the many rumors that have
been circulating during the past two years about the immanent dangers of a
dam in the Fars province of Iran to the national heritages of that
country Herein attached, we forward the final draft version of an open
letter addressed to the people of the world and the United Nations
Organizations written in this regard. It was crafted on August 31st, 2005
and immediately posted on the Internet. We are proud to report that so far
it has attracted more than 25,910 signatures (15560 on the Internet and
10350 by the people who signed it at the desks the Committee volunteers
have set up in front of museums and libraries all over the world). The
list of these signatures and all supporting documents for the open letter
could be found both on the Internet at the following addresses and at the
headquarters of the Committee: http://www.iran-emrooz.net/index.php?URL=http://www.petitiononline.com/Pasargad/petition.html http://www.iran-emrooz.net/index.php?URL=http://www.savepasargad.com Our
campaign is an on-going one that will not stop until it is clear to all
involved that there is no longer any threat to the valuable treasures of
the Pasargad Plains. This week, we are embarking on a weekly television
program that will be broadcast to all corners of the globe, including
Iran, to inform and educate Iranians and other nationalities alike about
this outrageous act. At this time, on behalf of more than 25,000
people, we present this petition to you and respectfully ask for your
immediate attention. This is a serious matter that begs immediate action.
Please request the Iranian authorities to halt all operations on the
Sivand Dam until a reliable investigation can be conducted under the
auspices of UNESCO. Upon a complete and thorough examination of the
potential detrimental outcomes, if any major threat does exist, the
government of Iran should be persuaded to abandon the Dam project for
good. We will continue our efforts; provide accurate information on
this topic and gather as many signatures as possible to strengthen our
position. We have already attracted a lot of interest and support inside
Iran. This is a cultural campaign void of any political involvement and,
to this end, more and more people are joining our ranks everyday to help
salvage a precious part of our human heritage from the clutches of the Dam
and its reservoir. The Sivand Dam project is recklessly moving towards an
operational phase - a dangerous operation that could permanently
annihilate an important part of human history and rob us of vital
historical knowledge in the future. We are prepared to cooperate with
you, providing as much available information as needed. Please feel free
to contact us if there is anything you deem necessary. This is an urgent
matter and should be addressed within the next few months: The government
of Iran is planning to begin the operational phase of the Sivand reservoir
in early 2006. On behalf of the Committee
Shokooh Mirzadegi Dr.
Esmail Nooriala International Operation Liaison Committee’s
Spokesman
