National Geographic and Professional Values

There are a number of world organizations that although have originated in a certain country, they have responsibilities to entire the international community. Their professional services are expected to be rendered without any economic or political motives. They should also be incorrigible and immune to bribery and financial favors.

     National Geographic is one professional organization which, though national in nature, has grown over the decades to be respected internationally. Its output in form of maps and geographic data and information have been considered academic references, its passion for precision in details and correctness and its integrity in processing and presentation of information have always been presumed. But, no longer. The mis-information put out this year in the National Geographic Society maps of the Persian Gulf shows that people's blind trust in the information National Geographic presents may have been misguided.

     Evidently, the tradition of correctness and professional integrity built painstakingly over the decades by the founders of the National Geographic Society has succumbed to political pressure and money (call it substantial research funds). Certain Arab states with a lot of easy money obtained from natural reserves belonging to all humanity, do better to spend the money for improvement of their own lot, instead of gratification of tribal chauvinism. The money spent on their people's education and economic progress (not just family's economic progress) will go much further in making a lasting mark on the world map than just buying change of historical names. Helping to create a democratic state with people gaining the right to decide their own fate and use of their resources is a more lasting mark in history than the continuance of an autocratic family rule over a bunch of poor and uneducated subjects. While the names they try to change have been around for thousand of years and are a part of world history and culture, they themselves haven't been around for more than a fraction of a century. Pirates' coast, was it?

     Finally, the evident tacit approval of the American administration for the academic dishonesty displayed by National Geographic, goes further to hurt the feelings of the Iranian people toward the U.S. They see this as part of a deliberate program of de-persianization in the region, a legacy of the days of the British Empire. While the British still remain a staunch advocate of de-persianization in favor of Arabs and Turks of recent identity, it is a mistake for the Americans to pursue this route, which will further alienate Iranians toward the U.S. and reinforce the half-century old distrust of U.S. policies.  

     Iran will remain to be the most important and strategic country in West Asia. Judging by the past history and what our people have accomplished inside and outside the country, given a little freedom, it is inevitable that Iran will build a democratic state in the near future and become one of the most powerful nations in the world, economically and technologically. Iran will be a model state for all countries west of India, as it has always been. For America to continue hurting the feelings of the people of Iran, destroying the bases of our national interests in the region, and presenting itself as an enemy or a friend of the enemies, will influence very strongly the nature and the structure of future partnerships and alliances.

نشنال جئوگرافيک و ارزشهای حرفه ای

شماری بنگاههای اقتصادی بين المللی هستند که هرچند در کشور خاصی بنيانگذاری شده اند، ولی به علت نوع خدماتشان نسبت به تمامی جامعه جهانی مسئوليت دارند. از آنها انتظار می رود که خدمات حرفه ای خود را به دور از انگيزه های اقتصادی يا سياسی انجام دهند.

نشنال جئوگرافيک يکی از اين سازمان حرفه ای است که، هرچند در اصل ملی است ولي، در طی دهه ها فعاليت از احترام بين المللی برخوردار شده است. توليدات آن بصورت نقشه ها، داده ها و اطلاعات جغرافيايی از مرجع های آکادميک تلقی می شوند. علاقه زياد اين سازمان به دقت در جزييات و درست بودن، و امانت داری و شرافت حرفه اش در پردازش و ارائه اطلاعات هميشه پيش فرض بوده است. ولي، ديگر نه. اطلاعات تحريف شده ای که در نقشه های خليج فارس امسال توسط انجمن نشنال جئوگرافيک منتشر شد، نشان می دهد که اعتماد کورکورانه مردم به اطلاعاتی که نشنال جئوگرافيک عرضه می کند، شايد گمراه کننده باشد.

ظاهرا"، سنت درستی و شرافت حرفه ای که با زحمت زياد توسط بنيانگذاران انجمن نشنال جئوگرافيک در طی چند دهه پی ريزی شده بوده، تسليم فشار سياسی و پول (بخوانيد بودجه پژوهشي) شده است. برخی دولتهای عرب با انباشتی از پولهای آسان بدست آمده از منابع طبيعی که متعلق به کل بشريت است، بهتر است در راه بهبود وضع مردم خود هزينه کنند تا ارضای شهوتهای قبيله اي. مصرف اين پولها در راه سواد آموزی و پيشرفت اقتصادی مردم خود (نه فقط پيشرفت اقتصادی خانواده خود) اثر بسيار بادوام تری روی نقشه جهان خواهد گذاشت تا خريد تغيير در نامهای تاريخي. کمک به ايجاد يک دولت دموکراتيک با مردمی که حق تصميم گيری درباره سرنوشت خود و کاربری منابع طبيعی خود داشته باشند، اثر بادوام تری در تاريخ می گذارد تا ادامه حکومت يک خانواده بر مشتی رعايای فقير و بی سواد. در حاليکه نامهايی که آنان تلاش در تغيير آنها دارند هزاران سال وجود داشته اند و جزوی از تاريخ و فرهنگ جهان بشمار می روند، خودشان حتا بسيار کمتر از يک سده است که بوجود آمده اند. ساحل راهزنان دريايی نبودند؟

در پايان، تاييد ضمنی دولت امريکا از اين نادرستی آکادميک که توسط نشنال جئوگرافيک بنمايش گذاشته شده، بار ديگر روح ملت ايران را نسبت به امريکا جريحه دار کرده است. ملت ايران اين پديده را بخشی از يک برنامه سازمان يافته برای ايرانی زدايی در منطقه، ميراث امپراتوری بريتانيا، بشمار می آورند. در حاليکه انگلستان هنوز مشوق و پشتيبان ايرانی زدايی به سود عرب ها و ترک هايی که در تنها در دهه های اخير به کمک انگلستان دارای هويت ملی شده اند است، پيروی از اين راه برای ايالات متحده يک اشتباه است، زيرا ايرانيان را بيشتر از پيش نسبت به امريکاييان بيگانه خواهد کرد و عدم اعتمادی را که در طی پنجاه سال گذشته بوجود آمده دامن خواهد زد.

ايران هميشه يک کشور بسيار مهم و استراتژيک در غرب آسيا خواهد ماند. با توجه به تاريخ گذشته اين مردم ما، و آنطور که تا کنون در داخل و خارج کشور، فقط پس از کسب کمی آزادي، عمل کرده اند و ميکنند، انکار نمی توان کرد که ايرانيان در آينده نزديک ناگزير يک حکومت دموکراتيک بوجود خواهد آورد و ايران به يکی از نيرومند ترين کشورهای جهان، از نقطه نظر اقتصادی و تکنولوژيکي، تبديل خواهد شد و برای همه کشورهای منطقه غرب هندوستان نمونه خواهد بود، همانگونه که هميشه بوده است. امريکا بايد بداند که ادامه سياست آزردن روح و شکستن روحيه ايرانيان، نابود کردن پايه های منافع ملی ايران در منطقه و دشمن نمايی يا دوست دشمنان ما شدن، در طبيعت و ساختار مشارکتها و اتحادهای بين المللی آينده ايران تاثيربسيار خواهد داشت.
